A client file covered by professional privilege, a medical report on its way to a patient, the HR records a small practice keeps. The usual online tool needs that unprotected document on its server before it can lock it. Here the encryption runs on your own machine, so the readable version never leaves the desk it was made on.
You send a letting agent a passport scan, three payslips and a bank statement. The message lands in a shared inbox, gets forwarded to a colleague and sits on a laptop for years. AES-256 is the right default, until the recipient turns out to be a council department running a document system from 2010, or a client still on an old Acrobat. Then the strongest algorithm produces a file nobody there can open. Pick AES-128, or RC4 for genuinely ancient software, and match the protection to the oldest reader in the chain.
This is the PDF standard's own encryption, applied to a copy inside your browser: the document is never uploaded and the password is never transmitted, stored or seen by us. That is also why there is no recovery — nobody here has anything to reset. Keep it in a password manager; your original file on disk stays untouched.
