ODT is the text-document member of OpenDocument, an open standard (ISO/IEC 26300) maintained by OASIS since 2005. Under the hood it's a ZIP package of XML files describing your text, styles and images — a fully documented format that nobody needs a license to implement. It's the native format of LibreOffice and OpenOffice and the default document format of many public administrations.
